Ingots, rolled products, or continuously cast blanks of carbon or alloy steel are used as the workpiece. The blank is cut to the required length. The blank is heated in a furnace to a temperature of 1100–1250°C, at which point the steel becomes ductile and suitable for deformation. The metal is deformed by open forging (with hammers or presses) and closed-die stamping. During this process, the shape is changed, the structure is compacted, and pores and defects are removed. Flash is removed, the geometry is straightened, and mechanical treatment is performed if necessary. The forgings are normalized, hardened, and tempered to achieve the required mechanical properties. Ultrasonic flaw detection, mechanical testing, and chemical analysis are also performed.

Chemical composition

Typical composition includes: Iron (Fe) – the base of the alloy (up to 97–99%), Carbon (C) – 0.15–0.60%, Manganese (Mn) – 0.3–1.6%, Silicon (Si) – 0.15–0.6%.
