The difference between hot rolled and cold rolled steel

The difference between hot rolled and cold rolled steel

Depending on the technology for the production of rolled metal, two categories are distinguished: hot-rolled and cold-rolled. Already from the name it is clear that in the first case high temperatures are involved, while in the second it is just a strong pressure on the sheet. As a result, it is possible to obtain rolled metal with different technical characteristics and, accordingly, the scope of application.

Let's look at what features, advantages and disadvantages each of these options has in order to understand what are the differences between different metal breaks.

Advantages of hot rolled and cold rolled sheets

In the process of manufacturing hot-rolled sheets, high temperatures are used: about 900 degrees. This allows you to influence the crystallization of steel and significantly increases its elasticity. As a result, sheets are much easier to work with. The production technology is quite simple: the workpiece is heated to high temperatures and carried out under high pressure, where a high temperature regime is also maintained. The sheets are rolled up and left to cool, after which the material is packaged.

Cold-rolled steel undergoes the same primary processing as the previous type of rolled metal. The only difference is that at the last stage such sheets are subjected to additional rolling already at normal room temperature.

What are the advantages of hot rolled and cold rolled steel ? In the first case it is:

  • favorable cost;
  • high strength of the metal;
  • a wide range of products;
  • resistance to elevated temperatures, as well as sudden changes in temperature;
  • resistance to rust and corrosion;
  • long service life;
  • ease of use - such sheets are easier to process on different machines.

The cold-rolled sheet also has a number of positive properties compared to hot-rolled metal products:

  • increased degree of strength;
  • wide scope of application: it can be used, among other things, as a roofing material, and at other stages of construction and repair work, as well as in the automotive industry, car building, etc.

Disadvantages of cold-rolled and hot-rolled steel

Having talked about the features of production and the advantages of materials, one cannot fail to mention their disadvantages, which also affect the use of sheets. What are the disadvantages of hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel ? In the first case it is:

  1. The inability to control the exact dimensions of the sheet, as the steel contracts strongly when cooled.
  2. Ugly uneven surface , on which defects may also be present. However, they can be easily corrected by grinding or other type of processing.

Among the disadvantages of cold-rolled steel, one can only name a higher cost compared to hot-rolled sheets. However, it is due to a more attractive appearance, as well as increased strength and reliability of products.

By the way, differences between hot-rolled and cold-rolled rolled metal are also observed at the stage of application. Sheets of hot rolling of metal are most often used in construction and automotive industry. Cold-rolled sheets are relevant for corrugated board, car bodies and even enameled dishes are made from them.

Depending on where you plan to use rolled metal sheets, choose their type: cold rolling or hot rolling of metal.
