It is produced by vapor-phase amination of a substance such as ethanol with ammonia over aluminum oxide (Al2O3) or silicon oxide (SiO2) vapor at a temperature of three hundred and fifty to four hundred and fifty degrees and a pressure of twenty to two hundred atmospheres.

With regard to aluminum, zinc, copper and their alloys in the presence of moisture, also for some types of plastic, rubber and polymer coatings, it can be corrosive, therefore it is stored in steel containers. Reacts violently with strong oxidants causing fire and explosion hazard. Vapors of triethylamine are heavier than air, so they spread along the ground.

Where is it applied?

It is used as a catalytic solvent for the formation of rubbers, polyurethane foams, and epoxy resins.

as a corrosion inhibitor.

It is added in the manufacture of mineral fertilizers, herbicides, medicines, paints, fuels.
