Basalt fiber matting is made from natural basalt, a volcanic rock. First, the raw material is crushed and purified of impurities, then melted in furnaces at temperatures of approximately 1400–1500°C. The molten mass is drawn into fine fibers using specialized centrifuges or spinnerets. The resulting fibers are cooled and evenly laid in layers, forming a web. To ensure strength and shape stability, the material can be bonded mechanically (by stitching) or with binders. Next, the matting is heat-treated to achieve the desired density and thickness. Finally, the material is cut into sheets or rolls. The result is a fireproof, strong, and durable thermal insulation product.
Chemical composition
Main components: silicon dioxide (SiO₂) — about 45–55%; aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) — 14–20%; iron oxides (Fe₂O₃, FeO) — 5–12%; calcium oxide (CaO) — 5–10%; magnesium oxide (MgO) — 3–8%; sodium and potassium oxides (Na₂O, K₂O) — up to 5%.

In construction, basalt mats are used to insulate walls, floors, roofs, and facades, as well as for fire protection of structures and ventilation ducts. In industry, these mats are used to insulate furnaces, boilers, heat exchangers, and other equipment operating at high temperatures. In the energy sector, they are used to insulate pipelines and turbines. The material is also in demand in shipbuilding and mechanical engineering for heat protection and noise reduction.
