First, a mixture of alumina and silica (sometimes with zirconium additives) is loaded into an electric furnace and melted at approximately 1700–1800°C. The melt is fed to nozzles or rotating drums. The melt stream is broken into tiny strands—this is how the ceramic fiber itself is produced. An air flow stretches the fibers to the desired thickness. The fibers are captured on a large moving belt, forming a loose but uniform "carpet." The resulting fibrous carpet is further pressed or passed through a special chamber, where the fibers are lightly bonded. The mat is heated to remove residual moisture and stabilize the thickness. The finished roll is cut into mats of the required dimensions and rolled into rolls.

Chemical composition

The chemical composition of ceramic fiber is as follows: Standard aluminosilicate fiber Al₂O₃–SiO₂ Approximate composition: SiO₂ (silica) — 47–53%, Al₂O₃ (alumina) — 47–53%, sometimes traces: Fe₂O₃, TiO₂ — less than 1%.

Type by purpose

Thermal insulating wool is used to protect the walls and vaults of industrial furnaces (roasting, heating and ring), thermal units, transport trolleys and pipes, methodical furnaces. This material is also used as an insulator in the construction of blast furnaces, chimneys, generators, and gas ducts. Ceramic fiber wool has shown its effectiveness in filling expansion joints of any thermal installations, cavities in refractory masonry, and sealing dampers, windows and doors. Fireproof wool can be given any shape and form. Therefore, it is often used as a raw material for the production of sealing inserts, brake pads, high temperature filters, fire blankets and mats, catalyst holder in gas purification. Used for the manufacture of paper, plates, vacuum-formed products, various types of textiles (ropes, cords, fabrics, etc.), in the production of sealing inserts by vacuum molding, in the production of crushed fiber used for thermal insulation backfills. For additional insulation of vaults and walls of various types of stoves. For filling expansion joints in furnaces, gas burners and furnace trolleys.
