The difference between hot rolled and cold rolled steel

Depending on the technology for the production of rolled metal, two categories are distinguished: hot-rolled and cold-rolled. Already from the name it is clear that in the first case high temperatures are involved, while in the second it is just a strong pressure on the sheet. Disadvantages of cold-rolled and hot-rolled steel

Having talked about the features of production and the advantages of materials, one cannot fail to mention their disadvantages, which also affect the use of sheets. What are the disadvantages of hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel ? In the first case it is:

  1. The inability to control the exact dimensions of the sheet, as the steel contracts strongly when cooled.
  2. Ugly uneven surface , on which defects may also be present. However, they can be easily corrected by grinding or other type of processing.

Among the disadvantages of cold-rolled steel, one can only name a higher cost compared to hot-rolled sheets. However, it is due to a more attractive appearance, as well as increased strength and reliability of products.
