An alloy of nickel, aluminum, manganese and silicon is called alumel. These components are present in this alloy in approximately the following proportions: Ni up to 96%, Al 2.4%, Mn up to 2.2%, Si up to 1.2%.

Key characteristics of Alumel wire NMtsAK 2-2-1 1-3mm:

resistivity is 0.32 μΩ×mm2/m;

linear coefficient of thermal expansion is 13.6 10-6 (°C-1);

density is 8480 kg/m3%

alumel melts at 1430°C.

Nickel reacts with sulfur under conditions of strong heating, thereby forming sulfide, which makes the material more brittle and less ductile. This disadvantage is successfully eliminated by reducing the percentage in the aluminum alloy and increasing the volume of silicon. Due to this, the service life of alumel at temperatures above 900 ° C is significantly increased.

Due to the content of alloying components in the alloy, it can also be used for measurements at temperatures from 980°–1320°C, in rather aggressive media.

Alumel is extremely effective in pyrometry, where it acts as a negative alumel-chromel thermoelectrode.

The high ductility of the alloy makes it possible to actively use it for the production of wire, strips and compensating wires.

In industrial production, alumel wire for thermocouples is most often used. Thermocouples are used for remote temperature measurement in the range up to 1000°C.

The design of the thermocouple is as follows: 2 dissimilar conductors are soldered together at the end and work due to the thermoelectric effect. The two free ends are attached to the thermostat, and the soldered end of the conductors is placed in the reading medium. Due to the fact that the conductors are made of two different materials, when they are heated, a measured potential difference appears.

The described measurement possibilities are now widely used in the design of devices for temperature control.

An alloy of nickel, aluminum, manganese and silicon is called alumel
View by manufacturing method
Chromel alumel wire is distinguished by its resistance to high temperatures, and therefore is indispensable for the manufacture of various electrical devices with thermoelectrodes or thermoelectric converters. These two types of wire rods are produced using a special technology associated with the cold-rolled method, but the workpieces are taken in a heated form. They are distinguished by their composition of nickel (the main alloy), aluminum, manganese and silicon. An oxidizing agent is used as a production coating for this type of wire rod.
Chemical composition
Ni (93–96%); Al (1.8–2.5%); Mn (1.8-2.2%); Si (0.8–1.2%)
Type by purpose
Due to the content of alloying components in the alloy, it can also be used for measurements at temperatures from 980°–1320°C, in fairly aggressive environments. Alumel is extremely effective in pyrometry, where it acts as a negative alumel–chromel thermoelectrode. The high ductility of the alloy allows it to be actively used for the production of wire, tapes and compensation wires. In industrial production, alumel wire is most often used for thermocouples. Thermocouples are used for remote temperature measurement in the range up to 1000°C.
