Modern bismuth production does not exceed 6,000 tons per year, and a significant part is obtained as an accompanying element in the extraction of polymetallic ores. The percentage of bismuth in such ores rarely reaches even 1%, so a long and labor-intensive process of ore enrichment and subsequent isolation of this rare metal is required. Depending on the type of impurities contained in the concentrate, pure bismuth can be obtained by various methods: oxidative refining, alloying with sulfur, zeigerization, etc.

Type by purpose

Currently, the key consumer of bismuth is the metallurgical industry. Alloys of bismuth with various metals (lead, zinc, etc.) have a low melting point (less than +100°C). They are widely used in the manufacture of fuses, solders, valves, etc. The magnetic properties of bismuth make it optimal for the manufacture of instruments that measure magnetic fields. In addition, this metal is used in the production of magnetoelectric materials. An intermetallic compound of bismuth with manganese is used for the manufacture of plastic magnets, allowing the production of inexpensive permanent magnets with dielectric properties in large quantities. Bismuth plays a significant role in the production of stainless steels, also facilitating their processing on machines. When bismuth is added to an aluminum alloy, the ductility of the latter increases
