Cobalt is obtained mainly from nickel ores by treating them with solutions of sulfuric acid or ammonia. Pyrometallurgy methods are also used. To separate it from nickel, which has similar properties, chlorine is used, cobalt chlorate precipitates, and nickel compounds remain in solution.
