Kopel wire is an alloy, which in its composition contains about 43% Ni, 2-3% Fe; about 53% Cu and a few other impurities. For more information, see the table at the end of this article.

The chemical composition, mechanical and physical properties of kopel are very close to constantan, but still there is one property of the kopel alloy that no other copper-nickel alloy has. It has the maximum thermoelectric power in an alloy with copper, iron, chromel, while the temperature coefficient of electrical resistance remains very low, almost zero. In the presence of manganese, the e.m.f. from the copel decreases and it becomes more electropositive.

At temp. 100 °C, Kopel's thermoelectromotive force has an indicator of 6.95 volts, and at a temp. 600°C - 49.0 volts.

The density of the alloy is 8900 kg/m3 and the melting point is 1220-1290 °C.

Kopel is very heat-resistant and withstands heating up to 600 ° C without changing its main characteristics.

Kopel is most commonly used in the pyrometry industry. This is the main reason that the rolled alloy is a wire, much less often a circle or a tape. To obtain the most accurate data when measuring relatively low temperatures, use thermocouples with maximum thermal EMF. As a positive electrode, chromel, iron, copper are used, and as a negative element, respectively, constantan, alumel, kopel. According to the thermo-EMF value, the Chromel-Kopel thermocouple is best suited. It is used at measured temperatures up to 8000C. Less suitable for iron-kopel and copper-kopel thermocouples up to 7600C.

Very often, kopel is used for the production of compensating wires. Especially for them, wire of various diameters is produced, and with technical requirements that fully comply with GOST 3044-84. The price of such a wire depends on the diameter of the wire, the smaller it is, the higher the price is, respectively.

The main thing
View by manufacturing method
The wire is produced by drawing, under pressure. During the production process, the workpieces are not heated, which is why they are called cold-formed. The product is delivered after heat treatment in a soft state
Chemical composition
this thermoelectrode copper-nickel alloy contains 43-44% nickel (Ni), 2-3% iron (Fe), 0.5% manganese (Mn)
Type by purpose
The main area of application of Copel is thermoelectric thermometry. Wire from this alloy is used for the production of electrodes for low- and medium-temperature thermoelectric converters (thermocouples), as well as compensation wires for them. The wire is used as a negative electrode in a Chromel-Kopel thermocouple (TCC) and for the production of compensation wires between thermocouple connections. Another type of thermocouple that uses the alloy in question is copper-copel. The range of measured temperatures is from -250 °C to +400 °C. Short-term measurements can be made up to +600 °C. They can operate in both oxidizing and reducing atmospheres, as well as in vacuum. The copper-copel thermocouple is considered the most accurate of all types of thermocouples when measuring temperatures in the range of 0-250 °C.
