Molybdenum is a soft, ductile, shiny, silvery-white transition metal.

First, molybdenum powder is pressed into cylindrical blanks, which are then sintered in a vacuum or inert atmosphere at temperatures above 2000°C. This produces a dense and strong blank. The sintered blanks are then hot forged or rolled to form a rod shape and increase the density. This process also improves the mechanical properties of molybdenum. The rods are repeatedly drawn through hardened drawing dies. Each pass reduces the diameter of the wire. The process may include intermediate annealing to relieve internal stress. The finished wire is annealed in a hydrogen atmosphere to improve ductility and stability. After this, the surface is cleaned of oxides and contaminants, and chemical etching is sometimes used.
