Almost all electric furnaces and electrical appliances use nichrome wire, thread or tape as heating elements.

There are several ways to make products from nichrome:

Wire and thread drawing with intermediate heat treatment. Immediately before drawing, wire rod with a diameter of 6-8 mm is heated in special furnaces to a temperature of 1170-1230°C and quickly cooled. The heating temperature of the billet depends on the composition of the alloy. The next stage is the etching of wire rod in a mixture of hydrochloric and nitric acid with water.

The drawing of nichrome wire is carried out using high pressure. Production of products by drawing is regulated by the requirements of GOST 8803-89

     Drawing a hot-rolled billet to obtain a strip of nichrome. This method allows you to get a high-quality strip at the exit, exactly corresponding to the profile and cross section of the drawing channel. The resulting tape is of high quality and lacks sharp edges.

     Cold drawn stretch. The method is used for the manufacture of wire and threads from nichrome. It is carried out without preheating the workpiece. Regulated by GOST 12766.1-90

     Cold rolling. It is used for the manufacture of nichrome tape. It is carried out in accordance with the requirements of GOST 12766.2-90.

     Flattening - used to make tape from precision alloys with high electrical resistance. It is carried out in accordance with GOST 12766.5-90.

Nichrome has high heat resistance in an oxidizing atmosphere (up to 1250 °C), high electrical resistivity (1.05–1.4 Ω mm2/m), and has a minimum temperature coefficient of electrical resistance. It has increased heat resistance, creep resistance, plasticity, keeps its shape well. Nichrome is an expensive alloy, but given its durability and reliability, the price does not seem excessive.

Nichrome is widely used:

     for the manufacture of heating elements in high-temperature electric furnaces, roasting and drying furnaces, various electrical devices of thermal action, stylus for burning;

     as a heat-resistant (heat-resistant) alloy and chemically resistant alloy in certain aggressive environments;

     in parts operating at high temperatures, resistor elements, rheostats;

     as a sublayer and heat-resistant coating during thermal spraying.

     as an electronic cigarette vaporizer filament.

The high plasticity of nichrome allows it to be subjected to welding, turning, drawing, stamping and other types of machining.

The areas of use of nichrome tapes include: the manufacture of resistance nodes, as well as the use of tapes in compact rheostats. In addition, nichrome tapes are used for the production of various metal products that act as heating elements (electrical energy is converted into heat).

Another area of use of nichrome tapes is the creation of ballast resistors (they are often installed in forklifts, as they provide a uniform, smooth descent of large objects). Not only ribbons are made of nichrome, but also strips (they also have all the listed characteristics inherent in nichrome ribbons).

In the production of heating elements, resistor components of flat-rolled electrical appliances, a special alloy material is used - nichrome tape, foil, flattened tape.

A distinctive feature was the minimum thickness. When creating heating components of electric furnaces and other equipment, where there is no need for a large thickness, but a high electrical resistance is required, nichrome foil is ideal as a blank.

The alloy is based on such materials as chromium (16–21%) + nickel (56–79%), a small percentage of aluminum, iron, silicon, manganese impurities.

The base gives the nichrome tape the properties of heat resistance, corrosion resistance, the ability to convert electricity into heat, and at the same time makes it malleable and viscous.

The PARTAL company offers high-quality nichrome tape, foil, plush.

Nichrome Tape Brands

The most common brands of nichrome products in the industry are those from which X20H80 and X15H60 are made.

The symbol "X" shows the percentage of codholding in an alloy of chromium, "H" - nickel.

In addition, the brand can indicate data on production methods.

For example, a product obtained by the method of vacuum induction melting - X20N80VI, this is indicated by the last letters VI, or about the zirconium additive present in the alloy - X15N60N (marking H).

A special approach to smelting allows minimizing the percentage of harmful additives, and the Zr admixture increases the strength of products, enabling them to operate at maximum temperature parameters.

The chemical component of grades Kh15N60, Kh15N60-N, Kh20N80, Kh20N80-N and others is determined by the requirements of GOST 10994-74.

Main characteristics

The properties of the nichrome tape depend on the content of nickel and chromium in it.

The first promotes the dissolution of various additives, retaining their properties and forming foil plasticity at high temperatures, enhancing the oxidizing component in gas and liquid media.

Chromium is responsible for hardness, anti-corrosion properties, and increases the heat resistance of the product. Permissible presence of Fe, C, Al, P, Si, Ti, Mn is not higher than 1%. Ni and Cr increase the electrical resistance of the material:

     modification Х20Н80 is efficient at temperatures up to 1200;

     X15H60 foil is distinguished by its operating temperature within 1125 degrees.

Excellent anti-corrosion properties, the ability to expand in the heat, allow the use of nichrome tape in heating elements in production, in different environments - air, acid, liquid and others, even hyperactive ones.

Plastic properties allow it to be workable in many ways. The features of a tape made of such an alloy can be called:

     resistance to corrosion;

     low coefficient of expansion during heating;

     plastic;

     high electrical resistance.

An important characteristic of the tape is its low specific weight, resistance to vibration.

Nichrome Kh20N80 and Kh15N60 are the most common chromium-nickel precision alloys with high electrical resistance. The main metal that is part of these alloys is Nickel (Ni). Its share in nichrome is 55-78%. Chromium (Cr) is in second place in terms of quantity - 15-23%. The remaining components of nichrome X20H80 and X15H60 are iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), silicon (Si), carbon (C), sulfur (S), phosphorus (P), titanium (Ti), aluminum (Al).

The main elements of this alloy, nickel and chromium, determine the properties of nichrome. Nickel is able to dissolve in itself a large number of other metals, while maintaining good ductility. Also, this metal has high corrosion resistance in liquid and gaseous media and, as noted above, has high ductility and heat resistance. Chromium, in turn, has high heat resistance, hardness and is also resistant to corrosion. Thus, nichrome has high heat resistance, heat resistance and ductility, and also has high corrosion resistance.

Heat resistance determines the maximum operating temperatures of nichrome. For nichrome Х20Н80 - up to 1200 degrees. C (depending on the diameter of the wire), for nichrome X15H60 - up to 1125 degrees. C (depending on wire diameter) in accordance with GOST 12766.1-90. The influence of the amount of nickel in the alloy can be seen from this characteristic. The more nickel in nichrome, the greater the maximum operating temperature of the latter.

The next property is plasticity. It refers to technological properties that show what types of processing (stamping, drawing, turning, welding, etc.) a given material can be subjected to. Nichrome has high ductility, which makes it possible to obtain such types of products as nichrome wire and nichrome tape, including thin wire. Nichrome wire is obtained by pressure treatment, namely, by drawing.

The next most important physical properties of nichrome are high electrical resistivity and low temperature coefficient of electrical resistance. These properties, combined with high heat resistance, determined the use of nichrome in the form of wire and tape for the manufacture of high-temperature heating elements.

Nichrome X20H80 and X15H60 (nichrome wire and nichrome tape) are mainly used in electrical engineering. I use it in the manufacture of electric heaters, electric heating elements that work for a long time in air at temperatures up to 1250 degrees. C, wire and tape resistors, as well as rheostats in heating appliances. It is also recommended to use nichrome in the manufacture of heaters for electrothermal equipment of increased reliability. X15H60 is also used to create non-precision resistors.

There are several ways to make products from nichrome: Drawing wire and thread with intermediate heat treatment. Immediately before drawing, wire rod with a diameter of 6-8 mm is heated in special furnaces to a temperature of 1170-1230°C and quickly cooled. The heating temperature of the workpiece depends on the composition of the alloy. The next stage is pickling the wire rod in a mixture of hydrochloric and nitric acid with water. Nichrome wire drawing is performed using high pressure. Flattening - used to produce strips from precision alloys with high electrical resistance. The technology for manufacturing nichrome tape is based on pressure treatment using expensive equipment - mills, presses, furnaces. There are 3 methods of obtaining: Rolling. Nichrome is quite plastic, which makes it possible to produce wire from it by “cold” rolling. Large circles are produced by “hot” rolling. Drawing. It involves pulling workpieces (wire rods) through a gradually narrowing hole. After obtaining the required diameter, the wire is subjected to thermal and chemical treatment. Pressing. Blanks are obtained by extruding the heated alloy through holes in the fixture matrix.
