Alloy benefits include:

     heat resistance and durability;

     excellent electrical resistance;

     plastic;

     weldability;

     easy handling of the product;

     resistance to deformation at high temperature (over 400 ⁰С) and pressure;

     which are non-magnetic alloys.

In addition, nichrome has more than one mechanical quality in terms of benefits. And light weight.

What is nichrome?

Nichrome is a corrosion-resistant alloy consisting of 2 metals - nickel and chromium, and additives (manganese, sulfur, aluminum, phosphorus, iron, etc.). The alloy is resistant to temperatures up to +1300 ⁰С, and its ductility allows it to be used for the production of electric heating and resistive elements, various rolled products and wire (wire). Depending on the composition, nichrome is divided into certain brands.

Characteristics and properties of nichrome wire

The production of nichrome wire is limited to two main grades: Kh15N60 and Kh20N80. The features and characteristics of each brand are different.

X20H80 is characterized by:

     Composition 25% chromium, 75% nickel, 1% iron.

     Resistivity 1.13 ohm mm2/m (for wires with a diameter of more than 3 mm).

     Operating temperature 1250-1300 ⁰С.

Density Х20Н80 8500 kg/m³, specific heat capacity 0.44 kJ/(kg K).

Kh15N60 is inferior to Kh20N80 in terms of technical characteristics:

     operating temperature - 1000-1100 ⁰С;

     composition - 18% chromium and 60% nickel;

     specific heat capacity - 0.46 kJ/(kg K);

     density 8200-8500 kg/m³;

The specific resistance of this brand is 1.12 Ohm mm2 / m.

The low iron content of X20H80 means that the filament is resistant to corrosion and wear. Unlike X15H60, which is more susceptible to corrosion. However, this brand is used for the manufacture of samples, the cross section of which is characterized by greater plasticity and a smaller area.

As a filler, both qualities can include aluminium, manganese, titanium, silicon, iron and zirconium. The presence of iron increases the magnetic properties of the alloy.

Basic properties

The material for modern heating equipment for domestic and industrial purposes is, of course, nichrome wire. Properties meet the highest technological requirements.

     Specific electrical resistance: within 1100-1400 Ohm * m.

     The melting temperature is about 1400˚C, which allows you to work at 800-1100˚C. The maximum allowable value for work depends on the composition. So the iron content reduces it to 850-900˚С, for a pure two-component it is 1100˚С.

     Density: 8000-8500 kg/m3.

     High strength (σv=650-700 MPa); performance is maintained in an acidic aggressive environment and significant temperatures.

     Good ductility together with exemplary hardness allows for rolling and drawing.

Nichrome has high heat resistance in an oxidizing atmosphere (up to 1250 °C), high electrical resistivity (1.05–1.4 Ω mm2/m), and has a minimum temperature coefficient of electrical resistance. It has increased heat resistance, creep resistance, plasticity, keeps its shape well. Nichrome is an expensive alloy, but given its durability and reliability, the price does not seem excessive.

Nichrome is widely used:

     for the manufacture of heating elements in high-temperature electric furnaces, roasting and drying furnaces, various electrical devices of thermal action, stylus for burning;

     as a heat-resistant (heat-resistant) alloy and chemically resistant alloy in certain aggressive environments;

     in parts operating at high temperatures, resistor elements, rheostats;

     as a sublayer and heat-resistant coating during thermal spraying.

     as an electronic cigarette vaporizer filament.

The high plasticity of nichrome allows it to be subjected to welding, turning, drawing, stamping and other types of machining.

The main thing
View by manufacturing method
There are several ways to make products from nichrome: Drawing wire and thread with intermediate heat treatment. Immediately before drawing, wire rod with a diameter of 6-8 mm is heated in special furnaces to a temperature of 1170-1230°C and quickly cooled. The heating temperature of the workpiece depends on the composition of the alloy. The next stage is pickling the wire rod in a mixture of hydrochloric and nitric acid with water. Nichrome wire drawing is performed using high pressure. Flattening - used to produce strips from precision alloys with high electrical resistance. The technology for manufacturing nichrome tape is based on pressure treatment using expensive equipment - mills, presses, furnaces. There are 3 methods of obtaining: Rolling. Nichrome is quite plastic, which makes it possible to produce wire from it by “cold” rolling. Large circles are produced by “hot” rolling. Drawing. It involves pulling workpieces (wire rods) through a gradually narrowing hole. After obtaining the required diameter, the wire is subjected to thermal and chemical treatment. Pressing. Blanks are obtained by extruding the heated alloy through holes in the fixture matrix.
