The simple substance niobium is a shiny silver-gray transition metal with a body-centered cubic crystal lattice.

Niobium is first extracted from the minerals columbite and pyrochlore. These ores are mined and enriched using physicochemical methods. The enriched ore is then processed using hydrofluoric acid and sulfuric acid to produce niobium fluoride complexes, from which niobium is then isolated. Pure niobium is obtained by reducing smelting or electrochemical methods. The metal is then remelted in a vacuum to obtain high purity. The resulting niobium is cast into ingots. These ingots are then hot rolled or forged to give them the shape of rods. After hot working, the rods can be further subjected to cold rolling, drawing or pressing. Heat treatment is then carried out to improve the structure and mechanical properties of the metal.

Niobium rod, in addition to high melting point and strength, has good corrosion resistance in many aggressive environments. Therefore, niobium rods have become widely used in nuclear power engineering as structural materials.
