Under normal conditions, tungsten is a hard, heavy, shiny metal with a silvery gray color.

The process begins with the processing of tungsten ores (such as scheelite or wolframite) into tungsten oxide (WO₃). The oxide is then reduced with hydrogen at high temperatures, producing pure tungsten metal powder. The powder is then pressed into cylindrical blanks (briquetted) under high pressure to give the initial shape of the future rod. The blanks are sintered in a vacuum or in a reducing atmosphere (such as hydrogen) at a temperature of about 2000–2500°C. This makes the material dense and strong. After sintering, the rods are mechanically processed - rolled, forged or drawn - at high temperatures. This improves the mechanical properties and gives the product the desired shape and dimensions. After this, mechanical grinding, cutting or turning is carried out to the specified dimensions with minimal tolerances.

Type by purpose

Tungsten is widely used as screens to attenuate the flow of radioactive radiation in nuclear power engineering, in collimators and radiotherapy. Tungsten rods are used as heaters. Tungsten rods can serve as cathodes for radio tubes, electronic and gas-discharge devices.
