First, tungsten oxide is extracted from the ore (scheelite or wolframite), which is then reduced with hydrogen to pure metal powder. The powder is then formed into briquettes and sintered at high temperatures in a vacuum. The blanks are repeatedly deformed at high temperatures to improve the structure of the metal. The resulting rods are drawn through dies to the desired diameter. This stage requires intermediate annealing. The wire is then cleaned of scale and wound onto spools.
