First, the ore undergoes chemical treatment (usually by chlorination), resulting in zirconium tetrachloride. Then the zirconium is reduced, obtaining sponge zirconium. Sponge zirconium is melted in a vacuum or inert gas atmosphere. Ingots are hot forged and rolled to obtain blanks of the desired cross-section. Blanks are drawn through dies, reducing the diameter and forming a rod. Then the rods are ground, polished, and sometimes heat treated to improve the structure.
