First, polyethylene granules are cleaned and dried to remove moisture and contaminants. The material is either pressed under high pressure in molds or extruded into sheets. After molding, the blanks are cooled to maintain their shape and prevent deformation. The sheets are then cut to size, milled, edges rounded, and handles or grooves are applied for ease of installation. Afterwards, they are checked for strength, surface smoothness, and the absence of internal defects.
Chemical composition
High molecular weight polyethylene is a type of thermoplastic polymer based on ethylene (C₂H₄). The material is based on carbon (C) and hydrogen (H), which form long chains—[-CH₂–CH₂-]ₙ, where n is the number of links, determining the molecular weight and, consequently, the strength of the material. The composition is 99% polyethylene (-(CH₂–CH₂)-ₙ). Antioxidants (0.1–0.3%) may be added to protect against aging.
