First, the original photograph (scan or digital file) is taken and converted into gradations suitable for ceramic pigments. Tempered or optically brightened glass is used, which is thoroughly washed and degreased. Sometimes a special primer or backing is applied to the back. A special printer with ceramic inks is used to apply ceramic paints. The image is printed mirror-image on the back of the glass. Black and white or color printing is possible. The glass is then placed in a muffle furnace. During this process, the ceramic paints fuse with the glass surface, making the image become part of the glass rather than a layer on top. After slow cooling, the glass becomes very durable. Sometimes an additional protective background is applied to enhance the contrast and depth of the image. The glass is then cut to the desired shape, and the edges are ground and polished. After this, the piece is ready for installation in a niche or frame.
