Styrene acrylonitrile (SAN), Plexan sheet, transparent 3х1520х2050 mm is a thermoplastic copolymer of acrylonitrile and styrene. It combines the gloss and transparency of polystyrene with the high chemical resistance and strength inherent to acrylonitrile. SAN sheets are in demand for automotive interior components, electronics housings, household goods, and medical containers. The material maintains its transparency over time and is resistant to detergents, fats, and oils. It is easily thermoformed and injection molded, making it popular among manufacturers of aesthetically pleasing and durable plastics.

The main thing
View by manufacturing method
Styrene acrylonitrile (SAN) is a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile produced by radical copolymerization of monomers. First, styrene and acrylonitrile are purified of impurities and dried. Then comes the polymerization process. For SAN, bulk or solution polymerization in reactors with active cooling is most often used. Unreacted monomers are evaporated, evacuated, and either recycled or recycled. The polymer is then dried, granulated, or extruded into pellets; stabilizers, antioxidants, and colorants are added if necessary. Finally, the monomer content, molecular weight, transparency, and mechanical properties are tested.
Chemical composition
Styrene acrylonitrile (SAN) is a copolymer of styrene (C₈H₈) and acrylonitrile (C₃H₃N). In the finished material, carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen atoms form a strong chain that is resistant to acids, alkalis, and oils. Industrial SAN may contain antioxidants, stabilizers, and colorants that do not affect the basic chemical structure.
Type by purpose
Plexiglass applications include lighting fixtures (shades, partitions, face shields, diffusers), retail fixtures, plumbing fixtures (bathroom fittings), glazing of openings, partitions, aquariums, and transport glazing. It is also used in the manufacture of transparent components for vehicles, special equipment, and protective screens for machine tools.

Questions & Answers

Acrylic sheet grades

Acrylic sheets are available in the following brands: Limacryl, Setacryl, Altuglas, Perspex and Plexiglas.

Acrylic sheet standards

International standards for acrylic sheets:

DIN 16957:1985-06 - a standard establishing technical delivery conditions for cast polymethyl methacrylate sheets. This standard specifies the mechanical characteristics, optical properties, dimensions, appearance, acceptance, marking, test methods, thermal characteristics, physical properties, geometric parameters, material, and application range of the sheets.

ASTM D788 is a standard that establishes requirements for cast acrylic sheets produced using polymethyl methacrylate. It establishes uniform technical requirements for cast acrylic sheets, ensuring consistent mechanical and optical properties. This document covers aspects such as weather resistance, dimensions, impact resistance, tolerances, transparency, and surface finish. This document defines the technical characteristics, test methods, and quality parameters of the material for decorative applications, signage, and glazing.

GOST standards for acrylic sheets:

GOST 17622–72 - Technical plexiglass. This standard defines the technical requirements for plexiglass used as a glass substitute in various industries. It regulates physical and mechanical properties, quality standards, dimensions, transparency requirements, testing methods, and grades of plexiglass.

GOST 10667 - Standard defining technical requirements for plexiglass sheets. It is used as a basic document for the manufacture and design of components requiring strength and optical transparency. This document regulates transportation and storage rules, physical and mechanical properties, dimensions, material characteristics, testing methods, and labeling.
