Polyethylene granule (PVD) is produced in the form of granules, the structure of which consists of a large number of branched macromolecules that form a crystal lattice. Due to weak intermolecular bonds, this material has a reduced density, for which it received the second name - low density polyethylene (LDPE). Its main characteristics:

molecular weight: 80000 - 500000;

density: 0.910 - 0.930 g / cm3;

softening temperature: +80 - +90оС;

melting point: +103 - +115o C;

Brinell hardness: 14 - 25 MPa.

PVD has universal properties that allow it to be used for different purposes. Distinctive features of granules and products from this material are:

flexibility, plasticity and softness, making the product pleasant to the touch;

good resistance to chemically active environments;

the possibility of obtaining products with a shiny and perfectly smooth surface, which gives the product a more attractive appearance when compared with matte HDPE products;

impermeability to moisture and air;

resistance to ultraviolet radiation of the sun;

complete inertness and absence of smell, including secondary granules;

excellent dielectric ability.

The scope of secondary and primary LDPE granules is quite diverse. From this material today they make:

pipes for pressure mains or irrigation networks, as well as fittings for them;

cases of household appliances;

blown products, such as canisters and bottles;

thermal insulation, for which foamed LDPE is used;

electrical insulating sheath for cable products;

sleeves, bags, packages and films of various types, including shrink ones;

hot melt adhesive in powder form, obtained from crushed granules;

tiles made of polymer-sand mixture and roofing material;

component parts and components for the automotive industry;

non-woven materials, threads for textile production and other products.

The main thing
View by manufacturing method
In industry, for the production of high-pressure polyethylene, two types of installations are usually used, differing in the design of the reactor. The reactors are either tubular apparatuses operating on the PIP (perfect displacement) principle, or vertical cylindrical apparatuses with a stirring device; autoclaves with a stirrer, operating on the PIP (perfect mixing) principle. To obtain polyethylene with high molecular weight and density, polymerization is carried out at high pressures. This necessitates the use of thick-walled metal pipes and devices with a limited heat exchange surface. To ensure high speeds of the process, it is carried out at a temperature of about 200 - 300°C. The upper limit is limited by explosion safety conditions and also depends on the operating pressure in the reactor. It should be noted that the polymerization processes in a tubular reactor and an autoclave differ in temperature and residence time of the reaction mass in the apparatus. Considering the process of producing LDPE in a tubular reactor, several stages can be distinguished: mixing fresh ethylene with return gas and oxygen, two-stage gas compression, polymerization of ethylene in the condensed phase, separation of LDPE and unreacted ethylene entering the recycle, granulation of the product.
Chemical composition
Polyethylene is a carbon-chain polymer of an aliphatic unsaturated hydrocarbon of the olefinic series of ethylene. Polyethylene macromolecules have a linear structure with a small number of side branches. It is a white mass
