The rods are made from granulated polyethylene. The granules are fed into an extruder, a device that heats the polyethylene to its melting point (usually 130–160°C). The molten polyethylene is extruded through a molding tool, an extrusion die, which creates a round rod shape. The hot rod is immediately fed into a water bath or air cooling system to harden and retain its shape. The finished rods are cut to length and, if necessary, calibrated to obtain precise dimensions.
