Fluoroplastic gland packings

However, there are still some factors that limit the use of PTFE as a stuffing box material. It swells in liquid fluorocarbons at high temperatures, and upon contact with freons, even at room temperature, it slightly increases its volume. Not being wetted by water upon short-term immersion in it, the fluoroplastic is nevertheless wetted upon prolonged contact with distilled water, measured in tens of days.

Fluoroplastic gland packing can be made both from pure polytetrafluoroethylene and from fluoroplast with fillers, for example, graphite-filled. Saturation of fluoroplastic yarn with graphite with the formation of bonds between it and fluoroplast at the molecular level makes it possible to produce gland packings with unique, even more pronounced qualities than pure fluoroplast.

Fluoroplastic yarn canconsist of a thin twisted tape or a large number of twisted long thin fibers. In the second case, the gland packing is denser.
