First, the raw materials (iron, chromium, nickel, and other alloying elements) are melted in electric arc or induction furnaces. The addition of chromium (at least 10.5%) provides corrosion resistance. The melt is poured into molds or on a continuous casting machine, producing ingots or round blanks. The blanks are heated and rolled in a hot rolling mill to the desired diameter. For more precise dimensions, cold rolling or sizing is used. To relieve internal stress and improve the structure, the metal is annealed. The round is descaled, pickled, ground, or polished, depending on the surface quality requirements.
