Dnieper stuffing box AP, AFT, APR, HBP bays from 10 kg
Modern gland packing is, as a rule, a cord or rings made of asbestos impregnated with graphite. Asbestos-free sealing materials made of PTFE or graphite are also used. Rubber cuffs are sometimes used instead of padding. Many other materials are also used, which is determined by the specific operating conditions.
Asbestos braided gland packings are used for sealing stuffing boxes of fittings, centrifugal and piston pumps, as well as various units at operating temperatures from -70 to +300˚С.
Braided stuffing box packings are the most common type of sealing materials used to fill the stuffing boxes of fittings, centrifugal and piston pumps, and various devices. More than 70% of pumps, 80% of fittings are completed with these packings. They differ both in the materials from which they are made, and in the methods of manufacture (structure). Both of these factors significantly affect the performance properties of packings.
Braided packings are based on various fibrous materials. In the ATI sub-sector, for the manufacture of braided packings, threads and yarns from asbestos, cotton, bast and chemical fibers are used.
An important component of packings are various types of impregnations and fillers, which give them the necessary properties.
To date, a huge number of various stuffing box packings are available on free sale, which differ from each other:
weaving index - through and combined;
index by structure - reinforced and non-reinforced;
composition index - asbestos (and non-asbestos), graphite and fluoroplastic.
Asbestos gland packings
Seals of this type are used in equipment that operates with aggressive media, as well as at elevated temperatures and pressures. The material withstands temperatures up to 250°C and pressures up to 2.5 MPa (25 atm).
Working environment: neutral, aggressive, oil products, gaseous and steam. Used in centrifugal pump and fittings.

Fluoroplastic gland packings
Packings of this type are not only elastic, but also resistant to aggressive environments. The limitations of using these packings is that they must not be used in environments containing chlorine.
Scope: pharmaceutical, oil and chemical industries.
Graphite
Graphite gland packings
Graphite gland packings are characterized by high elasticity and good ductility during compression. They have a low coefficient of friction and high thermal conductivity, which virtually eliminates corrosion and mechanical wear of the working surface of pumping equipment shafts and valve rods.
The limitation of these seals is that they are not recommended for use in environments with high concentrations of nitrogen, chloride and chromium compounds.
Graphite packings are capable of operating at temperatures up to 650°C in various working environments, including: heavy and light hot oil products and oil and gas products, water, hydrocarbons, lubricating and thermal oils, organic solvents, cryogenic liquids and others.
Turning to the selection of the stuffing box packing you need, you need to decide on the purpose and scope of the equipment.
The material from which the gland packing will be made must provide the necessary tightness, not lead to corrosion on the equipment case, and also last as long as possible.
The seal must be suitable for the environment in which it is intended to be used. For example, if the pump pumps over aggressive media (alkalis and acids), then the stuffing box base must be acid and alkali resistant. A similar requirement applies to carbohydrates (gasoline, fats, oils).
Incorrectly selected gland packing can lead to depressurization, accident, loss of reagents, and so on.
On the other hand, pay attention to the temperature and pressure for which the seal material is designed. For example, the process of transporting oil is carried out at high temperatures. Rasealing in this case can lead to deterioration of the composition of the oil, ignition, release of vapors to the outside and even an explosion.
Pump stuffing boxes must be resistant to vibration, and must also have a high margin of abrasion resistance. For this purpose, they are supplemented with various components, for example, fluoroplastic.
