A profile pipe is one that does not have a regular circle in the cross-section. The end view is an oval, square, rectangle. The material for production is steel of different grades: carbon, low-alloy, stainless.
Production and properties of rolled pipes
The production of stainless steel profiles is carried out in two ways: hot or cold deformation of a round pipe; through a full manufacturing cycle - bending from sheet metal with subsequent welding of the seam. The sections of profiles produced in Russia range from 10x10 to 500x400 mm, wall thickness 1-22 mm, length 6-18 m. Product characteristics:
The density of stainless steel is 7.9 t/m3, which is slightly more than that of structural steel - 7.85. When a stainless steel pipe is shaped, a meter weighs almost the same as a product made of black steel of the same profile.
The mass of products is determined by finding the volume of metal and multiplying the result by the density. For ease of calculation, tables are used. Thus, the weight of a 6 m long profile pipe with a cross-section of 20x20 and a wall of 1 mm is: 0.62 kg/m*6=3.72 kg, with a thickness of 2 mm – 1.225*6=7.35. The composition of stainless steel includes up to 12% chromium, which makes the metal resistant to oxidation processes, corrosion, alkalis and other aggressive substances. A common brand is AISI 304.
To buy a profile pipe, you need to look at the conditions in which the product will be used. A stainless steel product is intended for use in an extreme temperature environment - a low expansion coefficient ensures resistance to heating - the pipe can withstand up to 1800ºС. Service life is 20-50 years.
Types and range of profile pipes
If the pipe is profile, the price per meter depends on the size of the section and wall thickness. Square stainless steel 40x40x4 costs 1341 rubles/m or 312 thousand rubles per ton. In addition to standard rolled pipe profiles, products with pentagonal and hexagonal cross-sections are manufactured to individual orders. Profile pipes made of stainless steels withstand temperature changes without damage, are resistant to scratches. Most often, the common grade AISI 304 (08X18H10) is used as raw material. Food alloy is suitable for the production of outdoor and interior furniture, equipment in industries with strict hygienic requirements. In rooms where there are not many harmful factors, an inexpensive analogue of AISI 202 (12X17G9AN4) is used. In marine shipping and at facilities where work is carried out with environments of increased chemical activity or structures are subject to additional loads, steels with special qualities are chosen: AISI 430, AISI 316. In all stainless steels, the mass fraction of carbon is reduced, and the main alloying element is chromium. Depending on the chemical composition, theew products have the following characteristics:
300 series: the austenitic structure is formed by nickel and stabilizing additives of manganese. The metal resists pitting and crevice corrosion, exposure to chlorine and sulfur, solutions of acids, alkalis, salts.
400 series: extremely high chromium content (up to 18%) and almost complete absence of other alloying elements makes the material ductile and at the same time durable. The ferritic structural class promotes good weldability, but is subject to pitting corrosion.
200 series: austenites in which nickel is partially replaced by stabilizers such as manganese and nitrogen. They have greater mechanical strength than the 300 series grades, but are less resistant to aggressive substances.
Main technical characteristics of profile pipes
Production technology: electric-welded and seamless, obtained by hot or cold rolling;
Section geometry: width, height, radius of rounding;
Wall thickness and metal content: the standards indicate the weight of 1 meter;
Section area: the profile pipe performs a load-bearing function, so preliminary load calculation is important;
Moment of inertia and moment of resistance (cm³): used in bending strength calculations;
Length: measured, non-measured, multiple of measured.
Profiles obtained from steel tape have one straight seam, which can be considered as a vulnerability: the weld-affected zone is characterized by lower corrosion resistance and higher stress. Solid seamless rolled products do not have such disadvantages.
Applications
Unlike carbon steel, stainless steels are not able to withstand serious mechanical loads, but their performance properties have found application in the following areas:
Frames of advertising and street structures, bus stops, canopies;
Fences, fences and railings, handrails on sea vessels;
Furniture: legs and frames of commercial and industrial equipment, warehouse racks;
Mufflers for vehicles, hydraulic cylinders, engine pipes, square profiles are used when welding car bodies;

Profiled pipes made of anti-corrosion steel are used for the production of medical furniture, equipping catering outlets, in the construction of conveyors, equipment subject to heating (grills, bread ovens). A significant proportion of manufactured products are used for the improvement of public places: railings in shopping centers and entrances, ramps, fences, entrance groups, gazebos, benches.
