Polyetherimide rod is produced primarily by extrusion or injection molding, depending on the required shape and size. First, PEI granules are loaded into an extruder, where they are heated to a temperature of 340–400°C (depending on the grade). In this state, the material becomes viscous. In extrusion: molten PEI is forced through a forming orifice corresponding to the cross-section of the rod. A continuous rod is obtained. In casting: the melt is poured into a mold and cooled until it solidifies. The rod is then cooled (usually in air or water), after which it is cut to a specified length. In some cases, annealing is carried out to relieve internal stress, especially if the rods are to be used in high-temperature conditions.

Chemical composition

The chemical composition of polyetherimide is determined by its macromolecular structure, which is formed as a result of the polycondensation of two main components: aromatic dianhydride and diamine - usually methylenedianiline.
